Previously, we shared about the new directive by the Ministry of Education (MOE) which makes it compulsory for all students in educational institutions under the Ministry to wear a Jalur Gemilang badge on their uniforms starting on 21 April.
Following confusion from the public on where to get the badges, MOE in a follow-up statement revealed that it will be providing each student with two units of the Jalur Gemilang badges for free for the 2025/2026 school session.
A Malaysian politician urged MOE to reveal the Jalur Gemilang badges project cost and the companies that were given the tender

With that in mind, the mandatory national flag badges have received mixed reactions from the public since the directive’s announcement by MOE.
Among those who voiced their opinion on the matter was MCA Education Consultative Committee deputy chairperson Felicia Wong Yin Ting.
In a statement shared by MCA on its Facebook page, Felicia welcomed the new initiative as a measure to promote unity and patriotism among youths, especially amidst many sensitive issues on race and religion taking centre stage lately.

However, she highlighted several issues regarding the initiative, including the cost and tender process in the procurement of the Jalur Gemilang badges.
Felicia thus urged MOE to disclose the companies involved in the project and the costs that parents would have to bear.

She asserted,
“Several issues arise regarding the Jalur Gemilang badges. Firstly, how was the tender process? It’s wise for MOE to reveal the names of the companies appointed to the project and the costs that parents have to pay.
“The MADANI Government should prove that all Government tenders were done through proper processes and governance, free from cronyism and nepotism,”

Besides that, Felicia hoped that MOE would not ignore other pressing issues the Ministry faces, such as school bags that are too heavy, teacher shortages, increased workload for educators, smoking and vaping among students, bullying and so on.
