Malaysia is a country filled with an amazing variety of food from many different cultures. With combinations of sweet, sour and spicy, our Malaysian cuisine is truly a food paradise at its best and it makes us all very proud!
What makes us even more proud is when we see people from other countries raving about our food. In this case, it is the ever-so-popular British celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver.
The well-renowned chef recently whipped up a Malaysian inspired whole baked sea bass, also known as ikan bakar to most of us Malaysians. And it looks absolutely delicious!
The Malaysian style dish was featured on the ever-popular Britain cooking programme called ‘Jamie And Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast’, which airs on Britain’s Channel 4.
Among the ingredients, he used were lemongrass, red chillies, shallot, ginger, kaffir lime leaves, and salt for the paste which he crushed them all together using the pestle and mortar, known to most of us as lesung batu.
He added onto the dish some fish oil, tomato puree, and lime juice. He then slathered the paste onto the fish, before wrapping it all up in a banana leaf. And we all know how much we Malaysians love cooking our food in banana leaf! I mean, take a look at our lepat pisang, nasi lemak and pulut panggang. Sedap gila!
And when it was time for him to give his dish a try, he dived right in with his fingers!
“I would usually use a knife and fork for this, but I’m not going to. Today I’m going to use my very clean hands,” he said.
“My Mum would kill me for using my fingers, but I don’t care. I’d go to my naughty corner for this. Delicious!” he added on.
That’s right! He went with the Malaysian way of eating with his hands!
Many Malaysians flooded the comment sections praising him for using his hands as it is the true Malaysian way.
The video has gotten over 962,000 views and over 56,000 likes.
I guess we know what we’ll be cooking tonight!
