Singapore has retained its title of richest country in Southeast Asia, with an average Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of $65,233 (RM273,717.67).
Based on a report by Utusan Malaysia, World Atlas shared that although Singapore is relatively small, with only 725.7 square kilometers, the country keeps its top spot thanks to its major industries such as electronics, petrochemicals and petroleum.
Malaysia has since taken 3rd place, with a GDP per capita of $11,414 (RM47,893.14). Brunei came in 2nd place with a GDP per capita of $31,086 (RM130,436.86).
Netizens believe we are undeserving of the placing
“Only politicians are rich, ordinary folks are still on par with Indonesia.”
“(Malaysia is) rich but salaries are not suitable for the cost of living. Only our country is rich, the people are not necessarily rich.”
“Only the country, the politicians and the capitalists are rich.”
“The Malaysian people are living in poverty, politicians are rich. What is there to be proud of? The word ‘rich’ seems rather foolish.”
“Our country is rich so ministers’ pockets are rich too. Ordinary folks work like slaves to buy rice that is just enough to eat. What is there to be proud of?”
