Malaysia is well-known worldwide for its cultural diversity, rich history and unique landscapes, making our country one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. In fact, we recorded a whopping 26 million international tourist arrivals in 2023, the highest in Southeast Asia.
Well, we can add another thing to our nation’s CV that’s unique: Having one of the highest number of public holidays in the world!
As shared by Malaysian-based British TV presenter and social media influencer Mark O’Dea on his Instagram account, he revealed just how absurdly high the number of public holidays that Malaysia has in 2024.
In the 40-second video, O’Dea shared that he received a unique 2024 planner which lists all the public holidays from all the countries around the world.
He then showed the planner listing down all the public holidays of several countries and regions, including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Vietnam and the United States.
Then the star of the show was revealed, as O’Dea slowly pans down to reveal our country’s public holidays, which are comically long compared to other countries that he had just shown.
As he slowly pans down, the Star Wars theme music in the background and the long list fit perfectly with the tune as if it was the iconic prologue opening crawl found at the start of every movie in the franchise.
In the comments section, many Malaysians were amused at just how many public holidays our country has, especially compared to other countries in the planner.
One commenter said that Malaysia would have one more public holiday should we finally get our first gold medal in the Olympics.
Another commenter jokingly said that he thought Malaysia would have a whole page dedicated to our public holidays, given how many there are.
Meanwhile, one Malaysian said that despite the many public holidays, many still complained when it doesn’t fall on a Monday or Friday, presumably so that it can morph into a long weekend.
