Adults usually encourage teenagers to get involved in sports or other beneficial activities during their free time. Unfortunately, certain activities teens get into these days are really scary.
A group of kids and teens in Kedah were involved in the notorious ‘basikal lajak’ activity and they were caught in a raid while showing off their stunts on the streets of Titi Hayun, reported Sinar Harian. ‘Basikal lajak’ is basically when the owner’s bicycle is dangerously modified, and they do illegal stunts with it.
The Chief Police of Yan, Deputy Superintendent Shahnaz Akhtar Haji, said that the police received a call from a civilian at around 12pm about a group of youngsters with around 50 bicycles.
“As soon as we arrived, we found that those who are involved were between 12 and 20 years old,” he said.
“The police only apprehended 10 of these bicycles along with the riders while the others managed to escape,” he explained in a statement today (1st August).
According to Shahnaz, the investigation found that those who were arrested came from Gurun Sungai Tiang, Mukim Ayer Puteh, and also Merbok, which is more than 35 kilometres away.
“All of the bicycles and the owners were brought to the Yan Police Headquarters,” he said.
“All of the ‘basikal lajak’ were confiscated. It will only be returned to the owner when they bring along the original bicycle parts like the standard handle bars, fork, front and back brakes. They are required to fix it back too,” Shahnaz said.
Shahnaz added that parents should be more aware of their kids’ activities, especially those that are underage.
Harian Metro shared a piece of similar news where kids and teens from Kuala Lumpur met up at Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir for their ‘basikal lajak’ activities. They even had a Whatsapp group for it.
These youngsters come from places like Ampang, Rawang, Bangsar, Petaling Jaya, and Klang.
It’s really worrying that a lot of kids and teenagers are involved in these kinds of dangerous activities. Parents should monitor their kids’ whereabouts and encourage them to participate in beneficial activities.
