A team of researchers has identified a dangerous species of gastropod in the waters of Mersing, Johor.
In response to that, the Johor Fisheries Department has issued a statement warning the public of the gastropods Petropoda (Creseis Acicula), reported BERNAMA.
According to the statement, the pteropod originates from tropical and subtropical waters and was discovered in Mersing by the research team from the Batu Maung Fisheries Research Institute, Penang, on 11 June.
“Climate change, increased water temperature and ballast water from ships are believed to be the cause of the spread of this species into the country’s waters.”
“This mollusc (soft-bodied animal without bones) has a sting that can cause inflammation, itching, dryness, peeling, redness and scaly skin,” reads the statement.
Those who have been in the area and have experienced any of the symptoms are advised to seek medical treatment immediately.
The Johor Fisheries Department added that they would be monitoring the Petropoda situation until it is safe.
Members of the public are also advised to avoid water-related activities in the area at this time.
Remember to share this with your close ones so that they are aware!
