Differently-abled individuals often face unique challenges, especially in the workplace. The job market can be particularly tough for them. It’s inspiring to see their hard work and perseverance despite these obstacles.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, @chef_leen shared her inspiring journey as a differently-abled woman who worked tirelessly to become the Head Pastry Chef of a renowned restaurant in Nilai.
She is hearing-impaired with 20 years of experience!
Born with a hearing impairment, Nor Adzleen Abdul Karim graduated from a local university and was given the opportunity to work at Gastrohub Restaurant & Event Space in Nilai, recognised for offering a variety of dishes at reasonable prices.
However, the 40-year-old’s journey hasn’t always been easy. She continued to explain how she initially operated a business from her home, eventually opening her own shop, but it was forced to close due to the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Today, she has found new success as the Head Pastry Chef of the restaurant.
Her career as a chef is a dream come true
Leen expressed her gratitude to her university for giving opportunities to individuals with disabilities to continue their studies and learn just like other regular students.
“Fortunately, my university has many lecturers skilled in sign language who work hard to teach students like me not to feel inferior but to compete alongside those with full sensory capabilities and always strive to move forward.”
As a mom of 2, she describes her career as a chef as a dream come true, as she had aspired to be a professional cook since she was young.
“I received strong support from my late uncle, who worked as a chef. During my time working with him, I saw that this career has a lot of potential but is somewhat underexplored by people with disabilities, possibly due to a lack of information,” she explained.
The restaurant offers hands-on training for students with disabilities!
Leen mentioned that Gastrohub Restaurant & Event Space has been up and running for over 5 years now and has about 30 staff members in different areas like the hot kitchen, baking, pastry, and service.
She also noted how they also offer hands-on training for students with disabilities who are interested, plus job opportunities for those who qualify.
When asked if Leen had any advice for aspiring students, she motioned,
“To students, whether able-bodied or differently-abled, stay strong, be determined, and keep striving for success! Don’t waste time, keep pushing forward and delve as deep as possible into learning for your future. Seize every opportunity while you can. Prove your extraordinary abilities.”
We hope this story motivates others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles they might encounter!
