Times are tough, and with inflation showing no sign of improving anytime soon, many people are racking their brains to come up with survival tips. Unfortunately, desperate times have prompted some people to steal, when there is never an excuse for such a desperate measure.
Just recently, a man in Terengganu was caught stealing RM22 from the donation box in a mosque. Stealing is never right but surprisingly, a Malaysian businessman who does not even know the accused personally is ready to bear the legal cost for him. To help a stranger financially which involves a huge amount is a huge decision, and why is the businessman being generous?
“I was told that the accused stole the money to buy baby formula,” he said.
Meet Datuk Seri Sunny Ung, the kind businessman who believes the accused deserves to be represented despite his circumstances.
“I am offering the accused the legal service from Mssrs. Ahmad Daniel & Co, and I will bear the legal costs.”
Kosmo reported that the accused decided to steal from the donation box in the mosque after he was scolded by his mother for not having the financial stability to buy baby formula.
Datuk Seri Sunny also hinted at the possibility for a mediation, without the need to bring the matter to the court given the nature of the case.
“I believe this matter can be resolved outside the court. The accused may have been trapped in a desperate situation.”
The accused, who is unemployed pleaded guilty to committing the theft 3 months ago and according to another report by Sin Chew, he also tested positive for drugs via a urine test, in which he may face up to 10 years of prison. At the time of writing, the Magistrate Court has fixed September 26 as the sentencing date.
Everyone deserves a 2nd chance in life. In this case, do you think it applies?
