The long-awaited moment has finally arrived after months of closure due to the Movement Control Order (MCO). Sports and fitness enthusiasts will finally be able to visit gyms starting 15 June 2020, according to Majlis Keselamatan Negara.

In their post, they wrote that closed halls like badminton halls and sports complexes will also be allowed to reopen.

“Gymnasiums, closed halls such as badminton halls and sports complexes allowed to reopen starting 15 June 2020,” they wrote.

Managers will also have to fill in a form on the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) website for the purpose of supervision by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Managers are to take note of the relevant standard operating procedures that are to be followed.

“Managers need to fill in a notification form at the MITI (Ministry of International Trade and Industry) website starting today (8 June).”

Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that this includes activities that do not involve physical contact such as badminton, weightlifting, skydiving, skateboarding, aerobics, yoga and various others.

He added that social distancing of three to five metres is to be followed when exercising, according to Sin Chew Daily.

Team sports, such as football, hockey, tennis, and fighting sports such as taekwondo, karate and martial arts, are still not allowed to be conducted for competitions, but training without physical contact will be allowed, provided a social distance of three to five metres is obeyed.

This is certainly good news for gym owners who have faced a lost of income ever since the MCO started and for gym members who have been waiting to get their fitness journey back on track.

But remember, social distancing is still a must and standard operating procedures are to be followed.

Stay tuned for more updates!
