In his latest televised speech today (27th March 2020), Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has announced a new comprehensive economic package that is meant to help Malaysians through the Movement Control Order period, which was enforced on 18th March 2020 and will tentatively end on 14th April 2020.
Among some of the economic initiatives announced includes a 3-month long payment of RM600 per month to employees who are earning less than RM4,000 a month. This applies only to those who are working under employers who have suffered a 50% or more loss in business since 1st January 2020. Which we can actually predict it’s a lottttt of businesses!
Employers must ensure that employees who undertake this scheme will not be terminated during this period and their existing pay must also not be cut, or be forced to take unpaid leaves.
This initiative is said to benefit over 3.3 million people and help avoid a rise in unemployment, and will cost the government approximately RM 5.9 billion.
