“Love can come from unexpected places”, is what they always say. And we recently learned that one of those places happens to be the popular MMORPG MapleStorySEA!
A Malaysian MapleStorySEA gamer, Kay, forged an unexpected Maple World relationship that went from the computer screen to the wedding altar!

Kay was gracious enough to talk to WORLD OF BUZZ about how her online game friendship developed into a romance that is now celebrating its 10th anniversary! Here’s how it happened:
Just one more game(?)

It all started in 2014 when the former MapleStorySEA player Kay received a message from an old friend, Jay, to return to the game. Lured by the promise of new adventures, she created a new character and stepped back into the charming, side-scrolling landscapes.
But building up her character and gaming skills from scratch was challenging, especially in terms of levelling up. Seeing her struggle, Jay invited Kay to join her guild.
A special sort of guildmate

Upon joining Jay’s guild, Kay was introduced to Don, who had a reputation for being kind, patient, and helpful. Their conversations began as casual guild banter, but soon, Don was personally guiding Kay through difficult quests. She said, “Eventually, we began training together, levelling up new characters and building our link skills side by side.”
To unwind from the game, they would retreat to their favourite in-game spots, such as the rustic grocer shop in Leafre or the ancient Henesys ruins, talking about their IRL days, dreams, and lives. “Those late-night chats became our daily routine and a highlight of my Maple days,” she said.
“I’m actually a guy!”

At some point, Kay trusted Don enough to ask to exchange phone numbers for further communication. To this request, Don shared a secret that reshaped everything: “I’m actually a guy!” He had been playing a female character all along, so most of the guild thought he was a girl! While she was initially shocked, the feeling was fleeting. The person she had connected with was the same, regardless of the avatar.
Then the IRL meeting happened

Eventually, they decided to meet offline for the first time ever. “I invited him to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate a mutual friend’s birthday at Sunway Lagoon, and he agreed. That marked our first real-life meeting,” Kay said. Don came all the way from Singapore just for their first physical meeting, and it was a very meaningful gesture that Kay still remembers until today. “Even though we had grown close, we still saw each other as best friends.”

One day, filled with a surge of affection, Kay half-jokingly mused, “How nice if you were my boyfriend.” His reply was as simple and straightforward as the friend she’d always known: “Why not? Let’s try.”
Where are they now?

Fast forward 10 years, and they’re finally married! Kay and Don often look back and smile at their journey — one that didn’t start over dating apps, an exciting mixer, or candlelit dinners, but over the magic of a virtual world called MapleStorySEA.

Their story is a warm reminder that the biggest rewards from online games don’t always come from defeating bosses, but also from the people you meet, the memories you create, and sometimes, even the love that can blossom from a simple, shared purpose.
If you’re looking for a game that offers meaningful in-game experiences, or perhaps one that lets you connect with other gamers and forge new friendships or relationships you can take offline, try your hand at MapleStorySEA!
