Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that 125,000 civil servants currently at Grade 1 will be promoted starting next year.

Speaking at the Prime Minister’s Meeting with staff from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) today (9 March), Anwar stated that the promotion will raise Grade 1 employees to Grade 5 beginning January 2027, covering positions in Administrative, Clerical, and Finance Assistants.

Anwar said that grade upgrades under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) will be rolled out gradually.

He added that while SSPA already allows for promotions, there’s a need to support positions in the lower grades by upgrading their ranks.

“To improve career progression, I’ve asked the Public Service Department (JPA) to set up a clear pathway for promotions from Grade 1 to Grade 5. This will benefit 125,000 Administrative, Clerical, and Finance Assistants,” he said.

Anwar added that the group will also need to complete a short two-week course to gain some basic exposure to Information Technology (IT) as part of their eligibility.

“I congratulate them, and we plan to roll this out within the year. The Chief Secretary has confirmed that the course for these 125,000 employees can be completed within six months, so the promotions will take effect by 1 January next year at the latest,” he said.
