It was announced on the 23rd July that usage of face masks will be mandatory in certain public places starting 1st August. Malaysians can use other masks such as cloth masks but they must be made according to certain specifications following guidelines from WHO.
While fabric masks are the trend, not everyone CAN and are supposed to be wearing it. The Ministry of Health released an infographic informing who should be wearing the three-ply masks and who should be wearing the fabric masks.
If you’re wearing a fabric mask, you should be careful and make sure the mask fits these criteria. Also please make sure it has filters that MUST be replaced daily.
Inner Layer | Middle Layer | Outer Layer | |
Material Properties | Water absorbent (hydrophilic) | Material that avoids water absorption (hydrophobic) and made from synthetic non-woven materials | Material that avoids water absorption (hydrophobic) |
Example of Material | Cotton or cotton-mixed | Polypropylene or cotton layer | Polypropylene, polyester or a mix of both |
Function | Absorbs liquid droplets | Increases filtration or absorption of liquid droplets | Limits any pollutants from penetrating the mouth and nose of the mask-wearer |
With a varying number of cases, this isn’t the time to be selfish anymore. Make sure to don your masks and maintain social distancing if or when you have to leave the house.
