Beginning 1st January 2021, all electronic scooters (e-scooters) seen on the road have to answer the police’s legal action, as e-scooters are not allowed to be used on the roads.
According to the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department Chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya, e-scooters have received a lot of bad rep recently as “It is a nuisance to other road users, besides being dangerous as it could cause accidents.”
“E-scooters can only be ridden in gazetted areas such as playgrounds and permitted areas around shopping centres.”
He added that a special permission license from the JPJ Director-General is needed to operate the e-scooters.
“So far, the police have identified three areas in the city where the scooters are being actively used, namely around Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Bukit Bintang.”
Currently, the police are only advising users to stop using them, but come 1st January; fines will be imposed on those who fail to follow the law.
So, e-scooter riders out there, take note of the latest rules and regulations in place to avoid getting an unwanted summon.
