While sweetness can be satisfying, and sugar is a source of energy, excessive consumption is dangerous.
A Malaysian man caught the attention of netizens recently after sharing how he had both legs amputated due to severe diabetic complications. In a viral TikTok video, the man revealed that he was diagnosed with diabetes after his favourite sugary drink led to his diagnosis.

His daily habit eventually caused him both his legs
The man, who now relies on prosthetic legs for his daily movements, said that he enjoyed the sugary beverages every night before he was diagnosed with the illness.
“Every time I hang out with my friends, I get myself a Coke or Pepsi with condensed milk. I wouldn’t say I was addicted to it, but it tasted so good,” the man expressed regretfully.
The man is not the only one who lost his limbs due to sugary drinks. In another TikTok video, a Malaysian woman, who relied on carbonated drinks daily to get herself energetic, was forced to undergo a leg amputation after the diabetic wounds and blisters spread.
She had to amputate her leg as a safety measure to avoid the wounds from spreading further.
“After I finished a bottle, I would get myself another bottle in just a few hours. I couldn’t focus at work without those drinks,” the woman said.

How much sugar is in a soda?
Added sugars found in common beverages like soda lack nutritional value and, when consumed in excess, can contribute to weight gain and lead to chronic disease. While many of us are aware of the sugar content in carbonated drinks, do we really know the exact amount of sugar in one can?
According to Very Well Fit, a 12-ounce Coke contains 39 grams of sugar (about 10 teaspoons), more than 80% of the recommended daily intake for a healthy diet.
Before reaching for that next soda, remember that moderation is key to preventing such life-altering consequences.
