In a recent video that’s been circulating online, police were seen firing shots at a car after they were seen chasing suspects on foot in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
Tuaran Regional Police took to their Facebook page to release a statement regarding the incident where they mentioned police had to fire at a car after 2 suspected criminals inside tried to ram their patrol vehicle.
The suspects were driving against traffic
The incident happened when a patrol unit from the city police headquarters spotted a car driving dangerously against the flow of traffic near a gas station in Telipok town, off Jalan Tuaran-Kota Kinabalu.
Tuaran OCPD Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin confirmed the incident and mentioned that the patrol unit tried to stop the car to keep other road users safe.
The suspects, both local men in their 30s, were later detained after a short high-speed chase on October 3rd (Thursday).
Suspects had prior criminal records
Noraidin also mentioned how the suspect driving the car attempted to speed up, trying to ram the police vehicle and make a quick getaway.
As a result of the suspect’s aggressive actions, the patrol team felt compelled to fire several shots at the car in self-defence.
“The suspects tried to run away on foot but were caught. We found suspected apparatus meant to be used for drug abuse in their car,” he added.
A later check revealed that the suspects had prior criminal records, and the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
He’s also advising the public not to jump to conclusions about the incident, as an investigation is still ongoing.
Police are encouraging anyone with info about the incident or the suspects to reach out to the Tuaran police or the nearest police station.
