“Being healthy is hard!” Here Are 6 Simple Hacks M’sians Can Try To Get In Shape

Being healthy is something that everyone wants but sometimes, we can get a bit too obsessed with achieving our dream weight. In reality, we should be focusing more on achieving a healthy diet above all else. 1. Choose more greens instead of restricting your food

You’ve probably heard of the “suku suku separuh” (quarter quarter half) diet that has even been recommended by the Health Ministry. This diet refers to the food portion on your plate which should consist of:

  • A quarter for protein (chicken, fish, etc.)
  • A quarter for carbohydrates (rice, pasta, etc.)
  • Half portion of greens (fruits and vegetables)

This diet proves that you don’t need to completely restrict your whole diet. Instead, you just need better control of your portion in order to make every meal healthier!

 

2. No time to work out? Start with some ‘deskercise’

The name’s pretty self-explanatory but just so we’re clear, deskercise (desk + exercise) refers to simple and easy stretches that you can practise even when you’re busy or glued to your work desk. Some movements that you can try are:

  • Wrists stretches (to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Leg stretches while sitting (to activate your legs if you’ve been sitting too long)
  • Spinal stretches (to avoid lower back pains)
  • Shoulder blades stretches (to defuse the straining on your shoulders)
  • Neck muscles movements (to avoid straining your neck)

Apart from helping to give your body some much needed movements, these stretches can also help to fight stress, elevate your mood and prevent lethargy after the end of a busy workday.

 

3. Load up on iron – be it from food or supplements

The reason why iron is important is that if your body lacks iron, it can cause fatigue which means we’d get tired more easily. This is why some of us can’t even handle going on a simple walk without feeling sluggish. To beat this, you need to increase your intake of iron which can be found in these foods:

  • Protein: Mussels, oysters, fish, organ and red meat
  • Fruit and vegetable: Broccoli, spinach, sweet potato, dried apricot, watermelon, dates
  • Carbohydrates: Pasta, brown rice, bread
  • Others: Tofu, beans, nuts, dark chocolate

But another easier option is to consume daily supplements to ensure your body is getting what it needs!

 

4. Have some guilt-free snacks with these healthy options

It’s very natural to want to snack on something. But in order to be more mindful of what you eat, make sure to throw out any processed, unhealthy snacks from your home and store some healthier alternatives such as:

  • Mixed nuts

  • Dark chocolate

5. Have your daily dose of coffee sans the sugar!
