The no-camping rule at beaches in the Port Dickson district was met with criticism online, with many visitors calling for a boycott of the beaches.

Negeri Sembilan’s Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, said that tents are not allowed for other purposes besides maintaining hygiene —to prevent immoral activities.

Despite the criticisms, Aminuddin said the situation would be tougher if rules were not implemented at 11 beaches in the district, reported Astro Awani.

“What if there were rape cases in the tents? The City Council and the Minister would be blamed because we allowed it.”

Aminuddin was saddened and baffled by the public’s criticism because he had previously received many complaints about the presence of tents and blue canopies. Now that the no-camping rule has been enforced, Aminuddin was shocked by the call to boycott the beaches in the district.

“Back then, people wanted to boycott because of the tents and blue canopies. Today, we have removed them, and people are still boycotting.”

“I don’t even know what to do. We can do as we please by prohibiting the setting up of tents, but allowing it tomorrow,” Aminuddin explained.

He said the authorities are always open to receiving feedback but also urged to respect the rules set. He added that the boycott movement would bring nothing but losses, especially to the vendors at the beaches, and highlighted that everyone should respect the beach as a public place.

Earlier, the City Council officers conducted spot-checks around the beaches in Port Dickson and warned those who set up tents there. Visitors are also encouraged to use the public washroom to change their outfits.
