Seedless Lychee? Me Likey
Lychee fans raise your hands up! We’ve got good news for you. The sweet, juicy fruit is now seedless. Yeah, it no longer has those small black round things that you could possibly choke on. So you can enjoy the sweetness without wasting much energy trying to pick out the seeds! Yummy!
The person to thank for this amazing news is Tibby Dixon, a farmer from North Queensland, Australia, who spent about RM14,000 (5000 Aud) 19 years ago on a Lychee tree from China, with the hopes of breaking the norm in fruit farming in his country.
As reported by Daily Mail, Tibby successfully bred the seedless Lychee tree through selective breeding where he painstakingly collected pollen from the male part of the lychee flower and transferred to the female part of the flower of the imported tree to get a small seed. He just kept going until he ended up with a seedless fruit.
However, it will still take a few years before he can plant enough for the seedless Lychee could be commercially sold in the market. It’s ok Tibby, when the time comes, we shall enjoy the goodness of your juicy Lychee!
