While everyone is home bound at the moment, stray animals are having a tough time in finding food and they are truly struggling.

Stray animals are having difficulties finding food because most food eateries are closed and shelters are running out of food. This shows that humans are not the only ones who are affected by the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Animal shelters urgently need help

According to the Malay Mail, Malaysian animal shelters and community feeders are running out of food to feed strays in light of extended Covid-19 shutdown. Amidst the MCO extension, animal shelters and feeders are sending out urgent requests to animal lovers and the public for help.

Malaysian Animal Welfare Association’s Founder, Mukunnan Sugumaran said the food for animals at his shelters could only last him until the end of the month. With the announcement of MCO, many petshops have been closed and this has made it difficult for feeders and shelters to get food supplies.

Many are conflicted to abide by the MCO and feeding strays

Even though most community feeders have stopped feeding the strays, Mukunnan encouraged feeders from his association to continue doing so.

“I told my feeders to continue feeding but do not go in a group. In the event they are stopped by police, I asked my feeders to give police my contact number and I will explain,” he said via Malay Mail, adding that during the partial lockdown, eateries are closed and strays will have problems looking for food.

He stated that it’s better for feeders to continue feeding rather than the strays rummaging through dustbins and creating a mess. However, many are conflicted between the urge to feed the strays and the need to adhere to the MCO.

Public to help feed neighbourhood strays

Malaysia’s Animal Association (MAA) have also expressed their concern on Facebook and urged the public to prepare some food and water for strays nearby if they could.

This is a difficult situation to be in because the MCO demands for everyone to stay at home but the well-being of stray animals is a growing concern as well.
