A 13-year-old boy was arrested by the police at Chukai in the Terengganu district of Kemaman, for driving a car recklessly and without a license while carrying 4 passengers on Thursday (June 29).
The Kemaman District Police Chief, Superintendent Hanyan Ramlan shared that the teenager was arrested at about 5:15pm after being spotted driving a car against traffic.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, the boy’s actions were noticed by members of the Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Division (BSPT) of the Kemaman District Police Headquarters (IPD) when they were carrying out Op Lancar/Op Samseng Jalanan in the area.
“Police officers detected the suspect driving a white Proton Saga, coming from the opposite direction against traffic while passing through Jalan Bawah Jambatan Geliga (Waterfront),”
“Officers on duty tried to stop the vehicle but the driver ignored orders to stop and continued to accelerate to escape. The police continued to follow and ordered the car to stop 3 times but their orders were still ignored,” he said.
Officers ended up having to chase the suspect for 10km before the teenager stopped the car and fled the scene.
“The suspect and 4 friends (the passengers) aged between 13 and 16 years old were successfully arrested and taken to BSPT Kemaman for further action under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987,” he added.
The owner of the car, who is the suspect’s mother, will also be called to testify and face action for allowing someone without a license to operate the vehicle.
In the meantime, Hanyan added that the police detected several other offences committed by the suspect, including causing the car to be driven recklessly thus endangering himself, his passengers and other road users.
“The suspect drove the car in a zigzag pattern on a federal road, starting from kilometre 155 to kilometre 157, Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan, and did not stop at the Mak Lagam traffic lights,”
“He had also cut dangerously and cut the queue at the Geliga Bus Station traffic lights,” he explained.
