Throughout the Movement Control Order, most of us are safe at home knowing that we have our brave frontliners battling the outbreak head-on. Our medical professionals are working themselves to the bone despite knowing the risk of the virus. One of our medical professionals are our nurses whom I daresay, no hospitals can function without.

In data released by the World Health Organisation (WHO), they revealed that the whole world is lacking SIX MILLION nurses to battle the Covid-19 pandemic. Berita Harian reported that the data was also released by the International Nursing Council (ICN) and Nursing Now in a report emphasizing the huge responsibility nurses play.

WHO Head Director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, told that the total number of nurses worldwide today is 28 million and represents more than half the medical workforce globally.

“Our nurses are considered frontliners thus it’s vital for them to be supported continuously so that they can continue helping people.”

ICN Head Executive, Howard Catton, added that this shortage caused the nurses on duty to be exhausted with the increasing workload.”In Italy, a total of 23 nurses were reported to have died of COVID-19 and according to current statistics, about 100 health workers have died during the outbreak around the world,” he added.

Despite this severe shortage, our nurses put a brave face and continue to help their patients. Despite the risks and even having families of their own, they ignore that and just focus on battling this pandemic. Salute to our medical professional heroes!
