You know that blinding feeling you get when you’ve turned off your lights and are about to fall asleep but you get a WhatsApp message and turn on your phone to read it, and it’s still blinding no matter how low you turn down your phone’s brightness?
Well, fret not, because WhatsApp has finally announced Dark Mode for both Apple users and Android users, as according to The Verge.
In a video posted to WhatsApp’s official YouTube page, the messaging mogul announces the new feature accompanied by a version of Paul Simon’s The Sound of Silence.
“Finally, dark mode on WhatsApp,” they wrote, echoing the relief of every WhatsApp user out there.
Facebook, who acquired WhatsApp, tweaked the dark mode to ensure it lowers the brightness of a phone’s display.
“During testing, we found that combining pure black and white creates high contrast that can lead to eye fatigue. So, instead, you’ll notice a special dark gray background and off-white colour that lowers the brightness of the screen, cuts down the glare and improves contrast and readability,” explained a WhatsApp spokesperson.
Here’s how you activate dark mode.
IOS: WhatsApp Settings > Display & Brightness > Select Dark Mode
Andriod: WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Themes > Select Dark Mode
Apparently, it only works on updated operating systems so don’t forget to update your phones.
Finally, no more sudden eye burns when checking WhatsApp messages in the pure darkness of my room!
