When anyone talks about Penang, the first thing that often comes to mind is food. Am I right?

However, besides food, there are also plenty of picturesque sights around Penang to take in and satisfy your Instagram feed with. From the food and sceneries to old buildings and street art, these are all sights to behold.

Speaking of street art, Penang is overflowing with these brightly coloured murals telling different stories and what’s most unique about some of them is the fact that they’re painted on shipping containers stacked on top of one another!

That’s right, as of December 2019, the Penang International Container Art Festival has started bringing street art to a whole new level with their gorgeous container murals!

Conceptualised by the Penang Global Tourism and Can Can Public Art Team, these container murals aim to revitalise the neighbourhoods in Penang and boost tourism.

These stunning, larger than life container murals were painted and birthed by seven talented Malaysian artists along with five of their counterparts from Russia, Canada, Netherlands, and Ukraine.

Here's a sneak-peek of what's coming your way this Jan – May 2020. International artists along with Malaysian artists…

As reported by The Star, each of these container murals measures at about 10 metres in height and can be found at these five locations around Penang:

  1. Prangin Mall — Georgetown
  2. Karpal Singh Drive — Jelutong
  3. Kampung Terang — Balik Pulau
  4. Dataran Pemuda Merdeka — Butterworth
  5. Aspen Vision City — Batu Kawan

In addition to that, the murals found at Karpal Singh Drive and Aspen Vision City have both earned a spot in the World’s 8 Best Street Art for January 2020 too!

FYI, there were a total of 80 murals from around the world nominated that month, and, not one, but two of Penang’s murals made it into the top eight!!! These two included the Batu Kawan mural (Connection by Caryn Koh) in seventh placing and the Karpal Singh Drive mural (Hope for the Future by Julia Volchkova) in second placing.

So if you want to check out some of the world’s best street art this year, make sure you jot these places down and make a trip to Penang asap!

Don’t miss this opportunity of a lifetime as these carefully painted murals will all be taken down by May 2020!

Well, there you have it, yet another breathtaking reason to make a trip to Penang for the experience of a lifetime. So make sure you start planning okay! Don’t say we bojio.
