Tun M Becomes First M’sian PM & ASEAN Leader to Speak at Oxford Union

Our prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad has achieved another great accomplishment as he becomes the first Malaysian prime minister to speak at the famous debate association, Oxford Union.

According to FMT, Tun M joins the likes of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher – who were both former UK prime ministers – as he makes an appearance to speak at the Oxford Union. Tun M is expected to give his speech in front of the debating association members of the Oxford University on 18 January 2019.

Aside from being the first Malaysian prime minister to speak at the esteemed event, Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said that Tun M is also the first “democratically-elected leader” from ASEAN to speak at the Oxford Union.

Syed Saddiq took the liberty to congratulate the 93-year-old via Twitter. You can have a look at the tweet below:

After months of planning, Tun M will finally make his appearance at the Oxford Union. He will be the first Malaysian & democratically-elected leader from ASEAN to be invited to speak at the esteemed Union.

FYI, the Oxford Union has a tradition of hosting speakers and debates since 1823. The student society claims to be a one-of-a-kind because former UK prime minister and Union Officer Harold Macmillan once said that they are “the last bastion of free speech in the Western World”.

On the other hand, besides Churchill and Thatcher, the Oxford Union had also hosted several esteemed and famous speakers from different backgrounds, such as;

• Morgan Freeman
• Dame Judi Dench
• Sir Ian McKellen
• Natalie Portman
• Johnny Depp
• Stephen Fry
• Anna Wintour
• Buzz Aldrin
• Micheal Jackson
• Shakira
• Senator John McCain
• General David Petraeus
• Malala Yousafzai
• Sepp Blatter
• David Cameron

Those are some big names!

It’s nice to know that Tun M is now the first Malaysian prime minister and ASEAN leader to speak at the Oxford Union because it’s definitely a great achievement. #RespekMyPM

Therefore, along with his many achievements, we also hope that he achieves more in the near future and continues to make Malaysians proud. To Tun M, all the best for your speech!
