It’s no secret that Malaysian food is well-loved by locals and foreigners alike. Hence is why it is not surprising when Malaysian dishes are featured on international platforms.
Recently, a very special Malaysian teatime snack was featured on The Great Australian Bake Off. Let’s peel into it, shall we?
Binge took to their TikTok page to showcase the rainbow kuih lapis segment on the TV show, featured by British cook, author and cooking show host, Rachel Khoo. Khoo, who was born to a Malaysian father, shared how the kuih lapis brought her back to her childhood.
Binge wrote, “Introducing this week’s technical bake: a rainbow lapis cake!”
In the video, Khoo explained how the kuih lapis is made.
“When I see this cake, I just have to smile because this is the cake from my childhood.”
“This cake is very well known in Southeast Asia. Made with coconut, tapioca flour and rice flour. It’s actually steamed, so you don’t need an oven for this cake,” she said.
Her fellow The Great Australian Bake Off judge, Darren Purchese, added, “I reckon it’s the perfect cake for International Week.”
Khoo went on to explain that you don’t need cutleries to enjoy the kuih lapis.
“It’s not really a fork and spoon kind of job. So, you just pick one up, peel off a layer and then pop it in your mouth.”
Khoo’s rainbow lapis cake boasts 9 gorgeous, vibrant colourful layers and honestly, our mouths are watering just looking at it!
