A recent survey conducted by the global business publication CEOWORLD Magazine has found that Malaysia is 1 of the most religious nations in Asia and ranked as the 23rd most religious country in the world.
The survey examined responses from over 820,000 individuals worldwide and ranked 148 countries based on their level of religiousness.
Somalia is the world’s most religious nation
According to the latest edition of the survey found that Somalia retained its title as the most religious nation in the world, with 99.8% of its population asserting that they’re religious.
Niger comes in 2nd place with 99.7% of its population claiming to be religious, while Bangladesh comes in 3rd (99.5%). Making up the top 5 are Ethiopia (99.3%) and Yemen (99.1%).
Indonesia is the most religious Southeast Asian nation, 7th globally
The highest-placing Southeast Asian nation in the survey is Indonesia at 7th place globally, with 98.7% of its population iterating that they’re devout to their respective religions.

- Indonesia – 98.7% (7th globally)
- Thailand – 97% (13th globally)
- Laos – 97% (15th globally)
- Myanmar – 97% (19th globally)
- Philippines – 96% (21st globally)
- Malaysia – 96% (23rd globally)
- Cambodia – 96% (26th globally)
- Singapore – 70% (100th globally)
- Vietnam – 30% (137th globally)
96% of Malaysians claim to be devout to their respective religions
As you can see from the list, Malaysia is the 6th most religious nation in Southeast Asia and 23rd globally. Furthermore, the survey found that 96% of Malaysians claim they’re devout to their respective faiths.
Within the Southeast Asian region, there’s a large gap between the countries’ religiousness with Singapore, which is ranked 100th globally, with some 30% of the population expressing that they’re not religious.
The gap is even wider with Vietnam, which is among the least religious nations in the world at 137th place, with only 30% of the population claiming that they’re religious.
