Recently, a local private university was called out by its students for allegedly cutting down the upcoming Deepavali break that was supposedly allocated to them.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, a student from the university named Hema* (not their real name) said that initially, the upcoming Deepavali break was set to be one week but was later changed to only one day.
“We are supposed to get one week holiday for Deepavali but now we only get one day holiday which is not fair for the Indian students because, during Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, all of us got one week break,” Hema told WORLD OF BUZZ.
The students have since started a petition in hopes that their concerns would be heard and addressed by the university as well as the Ministry of Higher Education.
Reason: Behind Schedule
Hema exclusively told WORLD OF BUZZ that when the students questioned the university as to why the Deepavali break was reduced, the university allegedly said that they are behind schedule.
“They are giving the reason that we are “behind our schedule”. This is absurd,” she said.
According to Hema, the university allegedly conducted only three days of classes online for three months.
“They wasted three months from October to December 2020 by only having Malaysian studies. Isn’t that a waste for us students (juniors in year 1)?”
Health & safety concerns
Hema also told WORLD OF BUZZ that she is also concerned for her health and safety at the university as physical classes are about to begin this coming Monday, 27 September.
According to her, the university will be allowing students who are not only fully vaccinated but partially vaccinated and those who have received their appointments back to physical classes.
“I have no idea how they are going to divide us.”
Besides these concerns, Hema told WORLD OF BUZZ that the students residing at the hostel have allegedly been couped up in their rooms and are not allowed to step outside at all.
Food was delivered to their rooms but according to Hema, “the food is horrible”; not only in taste but the cleanliness as well.
Here are some pictures shared by the students to WORLD OF BUZZ of the food they have allegedly received, which they claimed were filled with ants and other insects.
Below is the feedback that was given by a student living at the university hostel, explaining her concern about the situation at the hostel.
Hema told WORLD OF BUZZ, “When we bring this issue to the management they don’t really care.”
“As for now, our main concern is Deepavali break. We all want to celebrate with our family.”
She added that she hopes the university will finally address the student’s concerns and come up with a fair solution.
WORLD OF BUZZ has reached out to the university for a statement but has yet to receive a response.
More updates to come!
