A post by a Singaporean man on the social site Reddit caught the attention of netizens in the country recently as he felt rather underwhelmed after finally hitting SGD100,000 or approximately RM384,412 in savings.
In a post on the r/SingaporeRaw subreddit, the man said that despite hitting the milestone, he felt ‘normal’ and still doesn’t dare to buy expensive stuff or even dine out in restaurants.
Feeling underwhelmed despite finally hitting SGD100,000 in savings
The man elaborated that he finally hit SGD100,000 in savings at the age of 29 years and 6 months old.
He then shared his career journey, starting a job at an SGD2,300 salary and then going jobless, before getting an SGD3,400 job and most recently, working at a job that pays SGD4,000 monthly.
The man then iterated that the post was not meant to “hao lian” or boast, but he wanted to hear others’ opinions on what to do next as he felt that the SGD100,000 amount was still small.
He further elaborated that despite the savings, he still doesn’t dare to buy expensive stuff or dine out in restaurants as he wants to utilise the savings for rainy days.
“Not hao lian but to be honest with the small amount still don’t even dare to buy expensive stuff such as the latest gaming laptop.
“Not even dare to dine out in restaurants. Feels like got the sum of savings for rainy days but still don’t want to work hard for the next SGD100,000 for what.”
He added that even if he saved SGD1 million by the time he’s 60, the body would be too old and can’t even spend the money to the fullest.
Netizens advised him to live life and splurge on himself
In the comments section, many Redditors share their 2 cents on what the man should do, with most advising the man to splurge on himself a little and not be too tense about finances.
One commenter congratulated the man for the achievement and advised him to go travel the world, meet new people and try new food. Urging him to go “YOLO” a little as you never know how long you’re going to live your life anyway.
Many other Redditors agreed with this, urging the man to splurge some of the savings on himself as life is too short to not actually one’s life.
Meanwhile, another commenter advised the man to focus on increasing his income and learning how to diversify his savings rather than solely focusing on saving.
Besides that, one commenter puts the man SGD100,000 into perspective, saying that it’s something he should be proud of as not many have the discipline and financial awareness to pull it off.
