Previously, we shared how a former Kajang Prison inmate Wan Ji claimed that former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak received special treatment while in jail.

These include allegedly being placed in a special block and getting to wear regular clothes rather than the prisoner’s garb.

While the claim has since been dismissed by the Prisons Department, a prominent Malaysian lawyer has not ruled out the former Prime Minister getting different treatment in prison compared to other inmates, saying that it is something warranted for someone of Najib’s stature.

The lawyer, Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla took to his Facebook page to address the claims made by Wan Ji, saying that the latter should elaborate more on what he meant by “special treatments”, as what he asserted seems to be rather vague.

Sharing a newspaper cutout of his interview with Bahasa Melayu publication Sinar Harian, Haniff said that it was not as if Wan Ji claimed that Najib ate 5 times a day with English breakfast and lobster for lunch while in jail.

The lawyer further asserted that as a former Prime Minister, Najib should receive different treatment than the rest of the inmates for security purposes.

He stressed that there’s a difference between different treatment for security purposes and special treatment with special privileges.

Haniff elaborated,

“Najib is a former Prime Minister who’s undergoing a prison sentence. There must be other inmates who hate him.”

“In situations such as this, the safety of the inmate requires a different treatment.”

He added that if Najib is given the same treatment, he may be subject to threats of safety. Furthermore, such a different treatment is not only given to just former Prime Ministers but also ex-top leaders such as former judges and top police officers.

Hence, Haniff stressed that they deserve to get different treatment to safeguard their safety while in prison.
