After the effects of COVID-19, many Malaysians are slowly trying to get back on their feet and back into the workforce. However, in a funny clip posted by a Malaysian tourist who was at Jonker Street in Melaka, it seems as though humans aren’t the only ones bucking for better prospects.
In a TikTok video shared by a Malaysian who goes by Coach Zainal to his page @jinalajim, the user shared a unique experience he had while dining at an eatery on Jonker Street.
Panning across the video to show other diners enjoying their meal, Zainal then showed a makeshift stage located just feet in front of them. There, one Malaysian, who was dressed up as a Malaysian ghost, The Pontianak, sang his heart out wholeheartedly. After doing some sleuthing of our own, we discovered that the “pontianak” was singing the 1994 song Umpan Jinak Di Air Tenang by Ahmad Jais.
“When ghosts finish their work shift,” light-heartedly wrote Coach Zainal in the caption of his post.
Garnering a massive response online, many Malaysians took the opportunity to jest towards the Malaysian dressed as the pontianak, all in good faith and fun.
“Even ghosts feel the impact of the economy nowadays,” light-heartedly mentioned one user, while others were impressed that the ghostly figure enjoyed traditional Malaysian songs.
Another user jokingly added how even ghosts get tired of bothering the living, and opted to entertain them instead. A few users added how shocked they were over how good the ghosts’ voice was.
“She has to find part-time work, life is quite difficult now,” kidded one other user.
