Law enforcement authorities in Malaysia continue to crack down on undocumented migration and trafficking syndicates operating across state borders.
According to Harian Metro, security forces successfully apprehended a young Rohingya whose cross-border journey highlights the steep financial costs and complex logistics tied to illegal entry networks.
Suspicious behavior at Lembah Sireh Bus Terminal
During a routine security sweep under Ops Taring Wawasan, officers from the General Operations Force (PGA) Southeast Brigade detained a 20-year-old Myanmar national at the Lembah Sireh Bus Terminal in Kota Bharu late at night.
Providing details on the arrest, PGA Southeast Brigade Commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain stated:
“The 20-year-old suspect was detained at 10.30 PM after he was found behaving suspiciously in the bus terminal area.”
When approached and asked to verify his status, the individual failed to produce any valid personal identification documents. Instead of an official passport or recognised identification card, he could only present a dubious A4-sized paper document of questionable authenticity.
Following his arrest, the suspect was immediately escorted to the Kota Bharu District Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Division for further legal processing.
An 8-day sea voyage and a hefty price tag
Preliminary investigations uncovered startling details regarding how the young man managed to breach national borders. The suspect claimed he originally entered Malaysia back in 2024 by boarding a sea vessel departing from Meiktila, Myanmar, and landing in Gelang Patah, Johor, after an arduous eight-day journey.
“The suspect claimed he paid 7,719,660 kyat, equivalent to about RM15,000, to an agent who managed his journey from Myanmar until he entered Malaysia.” he said, as reported by Harian Metro.
Following his entry into the country, he reportedly found work as a vehicle body repair and paint assistant around Kulai, Johor. At the time of his arrest in Kelantan, he claimed he was simply waiting for a bus to head back down to Johor after traveling north to visit a friend.
Clampdown on smuggling networks
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is currently being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 for failing to possess valid travel documents or permits to stay in the country.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain emphasised that enforcement will continue aggressively:
“Intelligence gathering, monitoring, and enforcement actions will continue to be intensified to detect and eradicate migrant smuggling activities, as well as curb the entry of undocumented migrants through ungazetted routes,” he added.
