Starting October 6, 2026, all foreign-registered vehicles entering Singapore through its land checkpoints must possess a valid Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP).
The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) announced in a statement on Facebook that they had introduced new procedural steps to ensure full compliance before travelers even make the crossing.
New SGAC integration to verify VEP status
Under the updated ruling issued by the ICA, tourists and motorists entering Singapore by car via the Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoints must ensure their vehicles have a valid VEP before submitting their SG Arrival Card (SGAC).
Once the SGAC is submitted, the system will automatically verify the VEP status of the foreign-registered car. If the vehicle lacks a valid VEP, travelers will find themselves unable to complete their SGAC submission. Instead, they will be prompted to apply for a VEP before attempting to travel into Singapore.
This advance verification process is designed to alert motorists and passengers beforehand, giving them an opportunity to resolve any issues and avoid the massive inconvenience of being turned back at the land checkpoints.
Ensuring motor insurance coverage
Beyond permit compliance, the ICA stressed that having a valid VEP provides crucial assurance that the vehicle is properly covered by motor insurance in Singapore. Because valid motor insurance covering the vehicle’s entire period of stay is a strict prerequisite for obtaining a VEP, this advance check ensures that drivers have adequate coverage in the event of a road accident.
Travelers are strongly reminded to ensure their VEP motor insurance remains valid throughout their entire stay in Singapore.
Authorities also noted that this VEP verification requirement will be progressively extended to other vehicle types at the land checkpoints.
