Malaysia has officially commenced the repatriation of approximately 1,500 Myanmar nationals in the first phase of a high-profile repatriation program, drawing close attention and concern from international human rights organisations.
According to Harian Metro, the individuals repatriated today represent the initial wave of a total of 5,000 Myanmar citizens who have reportedly agreed to return to their home country voluntarily from various immigration detention depots across the nation.
Heavy security and strict restrictions at Lumut
It was reported that dozens of buses arrived at the Manjung Municipal Council Stadium near the Lumut Naval Base in Perak, escorted by police.
The Myanmar nationals are also expected to undergo documentation procedures before being taken to the nearby naval base and subsequently sent to Myanmar by ship. While the exact proportion of ethnic Rohingya within this initial batch remains undisclosed by Malaysian authorities, the United Nations notes that ethnic Rohingya Muslim minorities who face ongoing persecution make up roughly two-thirds of the estimated 190,000 refugees and asylum seekers from Myanmar currently residing in Malaysia.
Background of the repatriation plan
Harian Metro also said the large-scale repatriation initiative follows an announcement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in July, confirming that Myanmar had agreed to accept back 5,000 refugees in a rare coordinated repatriation effort that has sparked widespread anxiety among human rights groups.
Earlier this month, Myanmar authorities pledged to ensure a “safe and dignified” return for their displaced nationals abroad, following mounting calls and critiques from the United Nations and human rights groups regarding safety guarantees.
Anwar also said he would invite Myanmar’s coup leader and current president, Min Aung Hlaing, to make an official visit to help expedite the repatriation process.
Complex humanitarian realities in Southeast Asia
According to Kosmo!, Malaysia hosts one of the largest refugee populations in Southeast Asia. However, the nation is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention and does not formally recognize refugee status under domestic law, classifying undocumented arrivals instead as irregular migrants.
Many members of the Rohingya community originally fled systemic persecution and military crackdowns in Myanmar, particularly following the major humanitarian crisis in 2017.
