Despite the people’s backlash, Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir defended his decision of purchasing a new Volvo which will be used as his official car.
According to him as reported by The Star, the price of the car is cheaper after trading in two old official cars of the state.
He said,
“After checks were made, it was found that several older cars registered under the Menteri Besar’s office could not be used because they were faulty, so I made the decision to trade them in to purchase the new car.”
He further clarified that the Volvo is assembled in Malaysia which was one of the reasons the car is not so expensive although it is a hybrid.
He added,
“This shows that the state government cares about the environmental issues and tries to reduce the use of fuel and pollution.”
According to Volvo, the September price for the Volvo S9 T8 is at RM368,888 while the S90 T8 is RM388,888 not including the insurance coverage.
Should the state government be using only Malaysian cars or are they free to choose from any car brands they deem appropriate? What are your thoughts on this?
