One of the many things that define us is the Mamak culture. From early morning breakfast to late night supper, it’s not uncommon for us to find comfort food at the place at any time, and the restaurants are also available almost everywhere.
As Malaysians, our love for Mamak food/restaurants is undeniable and unstoppable. Recently, the Facebook page B神 BGod shared an anonymous open letter that the author penned to express his love for Mamak restaurants in Malaysia. Since he was a child, Mamak restaurants have been the only place that he has repeatedly visited for many reasons.
Air kosong with a smile
Some places, especially high-end restaurants tend to “push” expensive items on the menu to customers and ordering a glass of plain water usually ends up with a frown on the waiters’ faces. But not at a Mamak.
“Anneh will still serve me with a smile even if it’s just a glass of plain water.”
Maggi goreng like no place else
Maggi Goreng is among the best-selling items at any Mamak restaurants. Despite countless attempts, the author said that he always fails to make Maggi goreng just like how the Mamak restaurants do.
“Sometimes, the anneh cares if I’m full enough. He’ll ask if I want double for my noodles, or if I want extra chicken with it.”
(Never) less sweet
To control our sugar intake, we’ll make sure our beverages come with less sugar. As less as possible. The author playfully described how “less sweet” is almost an impossible scenario at any Mamak restaurants, but that has not deterred his will to frequent the place.
“The drink is as sweet as the memory of your first love.”
In Anneh we trust
Not all Mamak restaurants state the prices of their food clearly. At the counter, they simply let their fingers dance on the calculator and come up with a price. Regardless, the author still trusts the anneh at the counter and rarely questions the breakdown of the prices.
Be as loud as we can
The man also highlighted how the Mamak culture should be retained as that is the only place where the customer can speak as loud as they want, and no one tends to bat an eye even if the customers uttered some vulgarities.
