Dhol drums represent a symbol of music and tradition for Indian culture throughout the world. While the instrument does differ in looks depending on which subcontinent it is played in, its appearance as a double-headed drum in Malaysia makes it a standout among others for sure.
A recent TikTok video posted by user @rsquare78 has been making waves online of a duo who was spotted playing dhol drums at an event in Seremban. However, the video also came with a fun twist, as the ladies performed the drums with the accompaniment of a man who was playing a violin.
Melodic and beautiful in every sense of the word, the trio made heads turn while playing instrumental for the song Mella Mella Ennai Thottu, a single from the 1984 Tamil movie Vazhkai. Hyping them up during their performance, the crowd was in full swing while listening to and cheering for the talented entertainers.
In a conversation with WORLD OF BUZZ, the user revealed that they represent the duo behind Rsquare Twins Dholi. As identical twin sisters, Rachel Joe and Rebecca Joe are Malaysian dhol drum performers who occasionally collaborate with DJs and musicians for public events. That was such in the TikTok video itself, where they performed with violinist SV Hireish Thayanantham.
“This was an impromptu performance and the video was taken at a wedding reception for one of our clients. The violinist is a separate performer whom we’ve also performed with several times prior to this,” said Rachel Joe to WORLD OF BUZZ.
Receiving significant praise for putting on a magnificent show, many Malaysians were in awe over not only how skilful the twins were when playing the dhol drums, but how their harmonies paired melodically with the violinist.
“I can’t take my eyes off those two young ladies. Simply wow, keep rocking girls!” wrote one user.
