It is normal to want your husband or partner in the room when the mother is giving birth but if you are planning to do so in Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar then you would be disappointed. That’s because Kedah State Health Department has confirmed that they no longer allow mothers to be accompanied by a birthing partner starting from August 26.

According to Harian Metro, the director of Kedah State Health Department, Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail said that they were forced to do so after a 23-year-old father threw a fit when his demand for a Caesarean for his wife was rejected on Saturday (August 25). The hospital decided not to do so as his wife did not say that she wanted a Caesarean birth.

Apparently, when the hospital rejected the husband’s request, he was upset and went berserk. Maybe he didn’t want to see his wife in pain? He was so angry that he punched and spoilt the door of the labour ward and ignored requests of security personnel to wait outside the ward after that.

“Following that incident, the hospital has decided to temporarily stop allowing birthing partners for women in labour as we need to check through our procedures for birthing partners to ensure that similar incidents do not happen. The hospital has also made a police report and the man will be called in for a discussion to find out why he acted that way,” a statement from Dr Norhizan said.

It was reported that the 24-year-old mother, who was giving birth to her second baby, came to the hospital at around 8.27pm on Friday (August 24) before her husband threw a tantrum the next morning around 1.15am. The notice went viral on social media and many people were commenting that it was unfair that the hospital had temporarily banned birthing partners all because of the actions of one man.

Dr Norhizan said that both the mother and baby had a natural birth and they have already been discharged. He added that he hopes family members of any patients would be able to control their emotions so that the hospital could give the best treatment to all the patients.

It may be your loved one in the ward but do keep calm to ensure that the doctors are able to do the best for them!
