Malaysian celebrity preacher, Syed Shah Iqmal Syed Mohd Shaiful, better known as Da’i Syed was sentenced to 10 years of prison on 1 charge of raping.

According to a report by Sinar Harian, the sentence came with 3 strokes of the cane and the rape took place 5 years ago on September 11, 2019, at a condominium in i-City, Shah Alam. Syed sobbed when the charge was read to him at the Shah Alam Sessions Court, and his wife, who just gave birth to their 1st child less than a month ago had to calm him down.

Syed’s family members also brought their 16-day-old baby girl to her dad before Syed was taken to Kajang prison.

In 2020, Syed pleaded NOT guilty to a similar charge.

Syed’s lawyer appealed to the court to postpone the execution of the prison sentence because he had to support his wife who had just given birth, not to mention that it was Syed’s 1st offense and he had no previous criminal records.

“If the court allows the postponement of the sentence, it will not be a gamble for any party because a new bail will be granted with stricter conditions to ensure that the accused does not escape.”

The court, however, rejected the appeal on the ground of “no special circumstances to postpone the sentence.”

The victim of the case is a woman, who, at the time, was only 23.
