The Ministry of Education (MOE) today announced that it has granted leave for Cikgu Din, a Malaysian teacher whose predicament went viral and resonated with many Malaysians.
In a viral Facebook post by his friend Harima Abd Rahman, it was revealed that Cikgu Din, or his real name Izzuddin Izhar, applied to MOE for a transfer from his current post in Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia as his wife is suffering from cancer, but it was rejected.
Cikgu Din’s transfer request and leave application to be with his cancer-stricken wife were rejected by MOE
Cikgu Din’s wife currently resides in Kota Bharu to get cancer treatment at a hospital in Kelantan. To be by his wife’s side in her battle with the illness, the teacher decided to travel between Sarawak and Kota Bharu every 2 weeks.
In doing so, Cikgu Din had exhausted all his leaves and had to even take unpaid leaves. He then went directly to the National Education Director, but his application for a transfer was rejected because he hadn’t completed three years of service.
In fact, it was also revealed that a higher-up in MOE allegedly even told Cikgu Din that the “one who was sick was his wife, not him”, so he could still perform his duties as a teacher in Sarawak.
The circumstances adversely affected Cikgu Din to the point that he was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and required treatment himself.
Yet, his request for a transfer was still rejected.
The couple’s predicament worsens as the wife’s chemotherapy is stopped as it was unsuccessful, with her doctor alluding that she might not have long to live.
CIkgu Din then requested leave from MOE to be with his wife, but it was unanswered up until today when MOE made a statement following the post going viral.
MOE immediately grants leave to Cikgu Din following the viral sharing
In the statement, MOE said that it acted immediately by granting leave to Cikgu Din to be with his cancer-stricken wife.
Furthermore, MOE will also hold a meeting with the teacher to discuss his welfare and other related matters.
The statement asserted,
“Immediate action to assist is being taken. The teacher has been granted leave to be with his wife…
“MOE prays for his wife’s recovery and will ensure the teacher and his family’s welfare is taken care of.”
