A 39-year-old man in China became seriously ill after eating a whole, live crab in an act of revenge toward the crustacean for pinching his young daughter with one of its pincers. The man had to be hospitalised with serious back pain caused by an infection by at least 3 parasites from ingesting the crab.

As reported by SCMP, the man, named Lu from Zhejiang in eastern China became seriously ill some two months after swallowing the live crab whole, with doctors initially perplexed by the illness. An initial checkup showed pathology changes in Lu’s chest, abdomen, liver and digestive system but his doctor was unable to identify the cause.

Dr Cao Qian, the director of the digestive system department at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou said that doctors repeatedly asked Lu if he had ever eaten anything unusual that could cause allergies but he said no. It was not until his wife recalled the crab-eating incident that doctors managed to discover the cause of the illness.

A blood test was then made and showed that Lu had been infected by at least 3 parasites from ingesting the crab. Thankfully, he has since recovered following the appropriate treatment but still needs follow-up checkups.

Dr Cao revealed that she had asked Lu why he ate the live crab to which he replied,

“I wanted to take revenge for my daughter. When we were by a stream my daughter was pinched by a small crab, so I got angry and put it into my mouth for revenge.”

Well, it looks like the crab also took revenge on Lu too. Thankfully, he has recovered and hopefully, he won’t be swallowing any other live creatures whole without making sure it’s sanitary first!
