Did you know that 1 in 2 adults in Malaysia are overweight or obese? This is according to a statement last year by Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sani, who further revealed that 1 in 4 adults in our country is not physically active and the least active groups are women (28%), students (39%) and senior citizens (59%).

Moreover, the damning statistics also found that 1 in 3 Malaysians has low health literacy given their unhealthy and inactive lifestyle, not eating adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables and smoking.

Up to 3% of Kuala Lumpur police personnel are overweight or obese

With that in mind, it seems that even law enforcement officers are not exempt from being overweight or obese despite their job requiring them to be physically fit.

This was revealed by Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid during the Kuala Lumpur Police’s monthly assembly at Dataran Perkasa today, whereby he asserted that up to 3% of the 10,000 police personnel under his contingent have an unhealthy body mass index (BMI).

In other words, up to 300 police personnel in Kuala Lumpur are overweight or obese!

Instructed to immediately lose weight

According to Harian Metro, Allaudeen instructed these overweight police personnel to lose weight “as soon as possible”, though no exact time frame was given.

The Kuala Lumpur Police Chief asserted,

“The task of the police is challenging and one of the ways to deal with stress and challenges is to be in good health, be fit and active.”

“I hope that all of my police personnel are free from diseases and at the same time, look handsome while wearing the police uniform.”
