The Ministry of Health (KKM) has officially banned the viral Pei Pa Koa ice cream as the cough mixture is considered a controlled substance.
Taking to their X (formerly Twitter) page, they shared a press release in regards to this.
They wrote, “Prohibition of the sale of ice cream products mixed with Pei Pa Koa cough medicine.”
“The Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) is aware and takes seriously the sales of ice cream products mixed with the traditional cough medicine, Pei Pa Koa (Cap Ibu dan Anak) by a chain of ice cream sales premises.”
They went on to share WHY the ice cream is not suitable for sale to the masses.
“Pei Pa Koa is a product registered with the Drug Control Authority, KKM, under the ‘traditional’ category, with the registration number MAL06061564T, which is used to relieve sore throat and cough which is contraindicated for pregnant women as stated on the label,”
“Under Section 13B (2), the Food Act 1983 does not allow for the preparation or sales of any mixed foods. If convicted, a fine of not more than RM20,000 or imprisonment for a period of not more than 5 years or both can be imposed,” they explained.
They ultimately ordered all premises that carried out the activity of selling Pei Pa Koa ice cream to immediately stop for the purpose of safety for consumers and the general public. They also requested that all advertisements and marketing materials in regard to this product be taken down.
