Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has confirmed that he officially handed his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The decision follows the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) stance regarding the conditional pardon and house detention decision involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Loke said the Prime Minister had asked him to remain in the position for the time being. However, when asked how long he would continue serving in the role, he said he would automatically resign if Najib were released, as reported by Utusan Malaysia,
Loke says Anwar asked him to stay on for the time being
Speaking to reporters at the launch of the Malaysia Maritime Week 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Loke addressed the speculation surrounding his political future.
His decision to resign follows an emergency meeting held by the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Central Executive Committee (CEC), which lasted nearly three hours after a conditional pardon decision involving Najib was announced.
Following the meeting, Loke personally handed his resignation letter directly to Prime Minister Anwar during a private discussion.
Detailing the Prime Minister’s response to his resignation, Loke explained:
“During the discussion, Anwar advised me to continue my duties for the time being. He will make a decision, but I told him that there must also be a specific timeframe.”
“When Najib returns home”
When pressed by reporters to clarify what that timeframe actually entails, Loke offered a striking and direct response regarding when his resignation would officially take effect.
“That timeframe is when Najib returns home; then my resignation will take effect,” Loke said, as quoted by Utusan Malaysia.
