If you’re feeling particularly strong, then it’s time to pack your bags and head to Zhaoyuan City in Shandong Province, China. Why, you ask? Because the city is offering a whopping 25-kilogram gold brick worth more than 10 million yuan (RM6.4 million) to the first person who can lift it up using only one hand.

The competition was launched by the Culture and Tourism Bureau of Zhaoyuan city on May 3rd on Douyin, and it has attracted massive attention on social media, with half a million people tuning in to watch a promotional video of the event. Basically, the entire country was buzzing with excitement!

The video features Chi Yixian, the bureau’s director, carrying the hefty gold brick with both hands at the city’s Gold Museum. But don’t be fooled – this challenge isn’t for the faint-hearted.

The competition is simple yet challenging: lift a gold brick with one hand. And not just any gold brick, mind you, the gold brick weighed the same as 2 standard passenger car tyres.

Challengers must lift the trapezoid-shaped brick with one hand, keeping the larger side down and parallel to the surface of the exhibition stand for a gruelling 25 seconds, and claim the coveted prize!

As the competition progressed, the tension in the air was vivid. You can see the people struggling, their faces turning red with exertion as they tried to lift the heavy brick.

But against all odds, an elderly man managed to raise the coveted brick using just one hand, leaving onlookers in disbelief. Feng Lili, the person responsible for the challenge, had to step in and clarify that the old man was, in fact, lifting a fake version made of cheap metal, weighing only half of the actual gold brick.

He stated that no one has successfully completed the challenge since the museum opened in 2009.

Despite this, the competition has certainly brought attention to Zhaoyuan City, the “China’s gold capital”, and its impressive Gold Museum.

You can watch the video here.

Whether you’re a gold aficionado or simply someone who loves a good competition, Zhaoyuan is a city that should be on your bucket list. You never know, you just might be the next gold-lifting champion!
