It’s not only cheap but it’s also delicious, and guess what? As of February 2024, Taste Atlas has ranked Malaysian Apam Balik among the 50 best pancakes in the world. Precisely, Apam Balik grabs the 35th spot in the best pancakes in the world.
Apam Balik, sometimes known as Martabak Manis is not only popular throughout Malaysia but also in Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia. Depending on the demand of the customers, it can be prepared in a thin or thick texture. Traditionally, an authentic Apam Balik MUST come with,
- Grounded, or chopped peanuts
- Sweet corns
- Sugar
- Butter
As time evolves and to attract more customers (particularly kids), vendors have gotten creative by putting chocolate chips, raisins, condensed milk, and even cheese to satisfy the myriad of taste buds. According to the official website of Taste Atlas, it was first introduced by the Chinese migrants in Penang.
So, which pancake has been crowned the champion, and identified as the BEST pancake in the world?
Those who are fans of Crêpes will be delighted to know that the French-originated food made it to the top of the list. The treats can easily be made at home, with only flour, eggs, milk, and butter as the ingredients, and everything is whipped into a batter before frying it in the pan.
Korean’s Pajeon, also known as the green onion pancake takes 1 spot before Apam Balik (34th), and Livance, a traditional Czech pancake was ranked as the 36th best pancake in the world, just 1 spot below Apam Balik.
What makes Livance a little different than the regular pancake is its longer time to make, as well as its taste with a hint of lemon zest.
