For those of you out there who may have a few pieces of not-so-safe-for-work material on your mobile devices, you might want to delete them soon, because if you didn’t already know, keeping hold of pornographic material on any of your devices is very much illegal in Malaysia.
An unemployed 25-year-old man had to learn that lesson the hard way when he was detained and charged for possessing four pornographic photos on his smartphone, Sin Chew Daily reports.
The man, who hails from Johor Bahru, was found to be in possession of the pornographic photos by regional police on 19th March 2019, which violated Section 292 of the Malaysian Penal Code, which prohibits the collection, sale or distribution of pornographic and obscene material. This offence, if the offender is found guilty, can carry a prison sentence of 3 years, a fine, or both.
But what is most ironic about this arrest is that the accused was actually assisting PDRM and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to look into cases of social media comments that violate the law, when he accidentally revealed to the police that he had porn on his phone!
Currently out on bail, the accused pleaded not guilty on his charges. The case will be investigated further in court on 17th March 2020.
So don’t say we didn’t remind you about cleaning up your phone’s gallery every now and then, before you get caught too!
