No matter how many times studies show us that spending too much time behind screens could lead to severe health consequences, our stubborn selves refuse to listen! After all, the worse it could do is deteriorate our eyesight right?

Wrong. It’s recently been reported on 14th October that a 16-year-old girl from Kaohsiung, Taiwan became colourblind during her summer vacation because she spent more than TEN HOURS a day on her smartphone!

According to Asia One, Dr.Hung Chi-ting says that her continuous exposure to blue light from her smartphone screen caused her eye cells to damage, leading to “red-green colour blindness“.

The doctor also reportedly told Chinese-language daily Liberty Times that this is the “first case [of colourblindness] in the world” caused by excessive phone use.

Fortunately, the teenager who goes by the name of Liu started medical treatment for her condition in the early stages of her diagnosis and has fully recovered from her temporary blindness.

In addition to spending almost half the day on her smartphone, the screen addict said that she would often use her phone in the dark during her summer break. Hmm why does that sound familiar?

Liu said she only started seeking medical help in September when she nearly caused a road accident while crossing the street because she couldn’t distinguish the colours of the traffic light anymore!

“I didn’t know the light was red. A relative, who pulled me back when I intended to cross the street, asked me why I was recklessly crossing the street at a red light.”

The distraught teen also said she started getting concerned when she began to lose her ability to see in the dark.

After her successful treatment, Dr.Hung warned Liu and other netizens to spend less than five hours a day on your smartphone. He also advised the public to take 10-minute breaks every thirty minutes while in front of a screen so you don’t put yourself at risk of possibly losing your ability to discern colour!
