Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Mahathir is without a doubt one of the most visionary and respected leaders of our time, which is why he often receives the highest honour when visiting other countries.

On 17 August, Tun M embarked on a five-day visit to China as the seventh prime minister and the Chinese government showed their admiration for Tun M by chauffeuring him around in a Hongqi L5, a.k.a. China’s most expensive car.

Hongqi literally means “red flag” and the company is the oldest and one of the most established automakers in the country. It specialises in manufacturing ultra-luxurious cars for billionaires and government officials.

According to Forbes, there are three variants of the L5 – one for the government, one specifically for the parade, and one for the civilians. The price tag for the civilian model starts at 5 million Yuan (approx. RM2.98 million) and potential buyers will have to go through a background check to see if they’re worthy of the car.

That’s because the red flag logo bears the pride and dignity of China, which is why the flagship government version of Hongqi L5 is only reserved for the most honourable country leaders in the world. In fact, the Hongqi L5 is even dubbed as the Rolls Royce of China, and former China’s President Hu Jintao was seen inspecting the troops during the 2009 Chinese National Day in a Hongqi limousine.
