World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on October 10. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the overall objective of the day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.
This call was recently heeded by Malaysian politicians Syed Saddiq and Hannah Yeoh, who took to both their Instagram accounts to advocate for more awareness on mental health issues in Malaysia.
“There were more than 1,100 suicide cases in 2021 alone. The suicide rate among children doubled to 6% in 2021 and about half a million children are struggling with mental health issues but have not sought professional help”, the pair said in the beginning of their video.
“Mental health issues are the second biggest health issue after heart diseases. It is a national issue!” said Saddiq with fervour.
Hannah also emphasised that “there’s no health without mental health. Physical health and mental health both must come together“.
They then shared 3 suggestions from mental health professionals.
1. Seek professional help
In dealing with mental health issues, Hannah suggests seeking help from professionals as they are more equipped to assess the state of our mental health, adding that “it is important not to self-diagnose”.
“Don’t be scared to share your experience with your doctor. They are not there to expose you to your family and friends”, chimed Saddiq.
2. Watch over family and friends
Secondly, Hannah highlighted the importance of keeping an eye on family and friends.
“If you notice a change in their behaviour or if they look depressed, reach out to them. Do not judge them. Listen to them.”
“Always be a friend in need, because you don’t know who’s crying inside”, said Saddiq.
3. Increase government funding
Finally, the outspoken MPs called for the government to increase funding for mental health-related initiatives.
There’s a need to increase doctors and counsellors in this field because currently, for every 100,000 Malaysians, there is only one psychiatrist.
These doctors and counsellors “need expertise and training to help them serve the people who have poor mental health”.
Before ending, Saddiq and Hannah highlighted again the importance of taking care of our mental health.
“You don’t have to struggle alone. Let’s do better. Prioritise your mental health!”

We love the support the YBs have shown for the occasion! Speaking about mental health, especially from a position of influence is important to help break the taboo surrounding it.
